Put a Pentax 6x7 next to a GW690 and the argument is over before you load film. The Pentax gives you a reflex finder, interchangeable lenses, and a mirror that slaps hard enough to soften a frame at 1/30. The Fuji gives you one fixed lens, a quiet leaf shutter, and a negative half again as large. Photographers nicknamed it the Texas Leica because it looks like a rangefinder that ate a few too many steaks, and that is exactly the trade: you carry more body to get a 6x9 frame that needs almost no enlargement to print big.

The negative is the whole point. Six by nine centimeters is enormous, roughly a 1:1.5 ratio that matches 35mm proportions, so a horizontal frame crops to a print with no waste. The 90mm f/3.5 EBC Fujinon is sharp corner to corner and contrasty in the way Fuji glass tends to be. Focusing is through a bright rangefinder patch, framed by parallax-corrected lines, and there is no mirror blackout because there is no mirror. The shutter sits in the lens, a leaf design that runs up to about 1/500, and it goes off with a soft click instead of a bang. You feel almost nothing in your hands.

What you give up is automation, and you give up all of it. No meter. No battery. The whole camera is mechanical, which is why it still runs after forty years sitting in a closet, but it also means you are reading the light yourself. This is where a handheld reading earns its keep. Because that leaf shutter sits in the lens, flash syncs at every speed, so a daylight-fill reading from the Zone Light Meter app drops straight onto whatever shutter speed you pick. It is the meter this body was built without, and an incident or spot reading is how you place every exposure on a camera this committed to one big frame.

The honest weakness is the frame counter and the lens together. The shutter has a finite life, and Fuji marked the body so you could track actuations, because past a certain count the leaf shutter wants a CLA that costs real money and not every tech still services them. And that fixed 90mm sits just on the wide side of normal for 6x9, so if anything you go wider, not tighter. The GSW690 sibling swaps in a 65mm super-wide, the field you want for landscape and architecture where you cannot back up. There is no longer fixed lens in the line, so for a tighter portrait you are out of luck. One body, one focal length, full stop.

Landscape and environmental portrait shooters still hunt these down, and the price has crept up as the Mamiya 7 went stratospheric. You buy a GW690 when you want a giant negative, weather you can ignore, and a finder that shows the scene the instant you raise the camera. You skip it if you need long lenses or you hate guessing exposure. For a slow, deliberate way to make very large negatives with very little fuss, nothing in the 6x9 world is this easy to carry.

How the app handles this body

  • Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
  • Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
