Load a 36 exposure roll and you get 72 frames. That is the whole pitch, and it is a better pitch than it sounds. The PEN-D shoots two vertical pictures in the space a normal 35mm camera spends on one horizontal one, which means a single roll covers a long weekend, a whole street session, a trip where you do not want to be reloading on a train platform. You hold it in one hand. It disappears in a jacket pocket. People do not clock it as a real camera, so they keep doing whatever they were doing while you shoot them.

The lens is the reason this one is remembered over the cheaper PENs. Olympus fitted a fast six-element F. Zuiko, and on the small half-frame negative it renders with a bite that punches above the format. The shutter is a leaf unit running from about 1/8 up to roughly 1/500, and it is nearly silent. There is no mirror, no slap, just a soft click that the quartet in front of you will never hear. Because it is a leaf shutter, flash syncs at every speed, so daylight fill is on the table at 1/500 if you ever want it. Focus is by scale and guess, the zone-focus way, with a distance ring you set by eye or by the little symbols. No rangefinder patch, no split prism. You learn to feel three meters.

There is a meter, and it is the body's weak point. The selenium cell across the front feeds a needle you read off the top deck, then you transfer the value to the rings yourself. It is not coupled to anything. On a camera built in the early sixties, that cell is now sixty years old, and selenium dies slowly and lies before it does. Plenty of PEN-D meters read a stop or two optimistic in dim light, or simply sit dead. You do not need a battery for it, which is the upside, but you cannot trust it either. This is exactly the gap the Zone Light Meter app fills: an incident reading from your phone gives you the shutter and aperture the aging cell can no longer be trusted to find, and you dial them onto the rings by hand.

Build is a dense die-cast body finished in chrome, heavier than its size suggests, the kind of object that feels expensive in the palm. It runs around 400g, fourteen ounces, which is a lot of camera for something that hides in a pocket. Film loading is the usual PEN routine through a removable baseplate, nothing clever, nothing to fight. The viewfinder is a plain optical finder, an upright vertical frame with no information in it at all. You compose, you guess the distance, you shoot, you wind. The rhythm is fast once it is in your hands.

Who shoots it now: half-frame people, travelers who want the frame count, street photographers who like a camera nobody respects. It sits in the cult-compact price class, cross-shopped against the Olympus PEN-F (the SLR sibling with interchangeable lenses) and against fixed-lens rangefinders like the Canonet. The honest weakness beyond the meter is the format itself. Eighteen by twenty-four millimeters is a small negative, so big enlargements show grain and softness that a full-frame shooter would never tolerate. For prints up to a normal size, and for the joy of seventy-two frames a roll, that trade is the entire point.

How the app handles this body

  • Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
  • Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
