Hand someone a 36-exposure roll and tell them they get 72 frames out of it, and watch the math land. That is the trick the PEN FV owns: a single-lens reflex that shoots the frame sideways at 18 by 24mm, so you reload half as often as anyone next to you. On a long travel day, or for a student rationing one roll a week, nothing else in the SLR world stretches a cassette like this. You compose vertically when you hold the camera normally, which sounds backward until you spend an afternoon on portraits and realize the format suits faces.

The shutter is the other oddity. Olympus put a rotary metal disc behind the lens instead of a cloth or blade focal-plane curtain, and it spins rather than travels across the frame. That buys you flash sync at the full top speed, near 1/500, which no conventional 35mm SLR of the era could match. It is quieter than you expect from a reflex too, because the mirror is a small front-surface piece swinging sideways into a porro-prism finder rather than slapping up and back. Speeds run from a full second to 1/500.

Here is where most write-ups get it backwards: the FV's finder is the bright one. With the meter gone, it uses a full mirror, where the metered FT split that mirror to feed a CdS cell and ended up dim and harder to focus in low light. The view is smaller than a full-frame body, as every half-frame SLR is, but it is a clean, contrasty ground-glass image, not the squinty FT view. That alone is reason enough to choose this body over its metered sibling.

The FV is the stripped variant. The PEN F wore the decorative gothic F on the front; the later FT crammed a meter inside, and the FV is essentially that body with the meter deleted. No light cell, no match-needle, nothing electronic to die. That is a feature now. The FT bodies are notorious for drifting cells and obsolete mercury batteries, so the meterless FV sidesteps the one part most likely to fail on a camera this old. You set exposure yourself, which is exactly where an incident or spot reading from the Zone Light Meter app stands in for the meter the body never had. Place your shadows, then set the lens.

The PEN F was a real reflex ecosystem, not a fixed-lens snapshot box. Olympus built a deep line of small Zuiko lenses for the bayonet mount, anchored by the 38mm f/1.8 normal, with a faster 40mm f/1.4 above it and wides and longer glass shrunk to suit the half-frame image circle. The bodies and lenses are all metal and surprisingly heavy for their size, machined to a standard that explains the cult following. That compactness is the whole reason the system still has one.

Where it sits now: prices have climbed because the design is collectible and the half-frame revival is genuine, but the meterless FV is usually the cheapest way into the system, cross-shopped against the FT by buyers who would rather have a simple body than a failing meter. Budget for a CLA, because the rotary shutter and the slow speeds gum up with age and a clean one is worth paying for. Get that done and you have a pocketable SLR that runs twice as long as anything else in your bag.

How the app handles this body

  • Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
