You get 72 frames out of a roll of 36. That was the point in 1959, when film was the running cost that decided how much you shot. The Olympus PEN ran two vertical half-frames in the space of one standard 35mm exposure, so a single cassette stretched twice as far. It was built to be the camera you actually carried, and that is what it became.
It is tiny. It vanishes in a coat pocket the way a deck of cards does, and the metal body has more weight in the hand than the size leads you to expect. The leaf shutter sits in the lens and runs a short ladder of speeds topping out near 1/200, which sounds modest until you remember what a leaf shutter buys you. Flash synchronizes at every speed, so you can drag a fill flash into bright daylight without fighting an X-sync ceiling. There is no rangefinder and no split-prism. You set distance on the lens by the zone marks, and the short focal length and small format hand you deep depth of field at almost any aperture you would reasonably pick, so the guessing forgives you more than it should.
The original PEN has no meter at all. You sunny-16 it, or you carry something that reads the light. An incident or spot reading from the Zone Light Meter app gives you a real number to set instead of squinting at the sky and hoping. The body never had a meter, so you bring one.
People shoot it now to slow down on a budget, and for the discipline of zone focusing. The half-frame format has a cult following again because each frame is small and grainy in a way that some shooters prize for its texture, and a few like the two-up vertical pairs that fall side by side on a contact sheet, though that is taste more than any documented trend. It works as a student camera and a travel camera, the kind you hand to someone nervous about film without much fear of them breaking it.
The honest weakness is the format itself. Half the negative area means coarser grain, and big enlargements fall apart faster than they would off a full frame. Scanning is fussy too, since most labs frame for 36 exposures and you are handing them 72 little verticals. And scale focus will burn you on close subjects in dim light, where depth of field stops covering your guesses.
Against a full-frame fixed-lens compact of the same era it loses on resolution and gains on economy and pocketability. It is cheap to find, cheap to feed, and the all-mechanical guts mean no battery to die and not much to break. People still buy it because it is the rare old camera you can use casually without it making you pay for it, which is the whole reason it existed.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
