Pull the batteries and the Pentax MX keeps shooting. The two button cells run the meter and nothing else, so with them out you still have a full mechanical camera from 1 second to 1/1000, flash sync at 1/60, every speed timed by springs and gears. That independence is the reason people who carry one stop worrying about it. Cold mornings, dead cells, a winter where you forgot the spares in a drawer: none of it touches the shutter.

It is also tiny. One of the most compact all-mechanical 35mm SLRs of its era, trading blows with the Olympus OM-1 it was built to answer, most dimensions within a millimetre or two either way. The finder is what keeps people loyal. It runs close to life-size, roughly 0.97x, bright enough that you can shoot with both eyes open and watch the frame float over the scene. The split-image wedge and microprism collar snap into focus fast, though that near-life-size magnification means glasses wearers have to press in to take in the whole frame. Down the right edge sits a vertical column of LEDs, over, under, and a green dot for correct, fed by a center-weighted meter. No needle to chase. Half-press, watch the lights, settle on the green, and your thumb learns the dial quickly.

This was Pentax's enthusiast manual body, launched alongside the automatic ME in 1976 and anchoring the K mount that had just replaced the old M42 screw thread. It took interchangeable focusing screens and a motor drive, which is where the pro flavor came from; the cheap stripped-down classroom Pentax was the K1000, a different and far simpler animal. Loading is a standard hinged back and a multi-slot take-up spool, nothing clever. The build is dense brass and the advance lever has a short, tight throw that feels deliberate every frame.

The honest weakness is the meter electronics, specifically the wiring and contacts feeding them. MX bodies of this age develop intermittent readings as the internal contacts oxidize, so the LEDs flicker or lie on a speed or two. A good tech cleans it; a bad one declares the cell dead when it is only gummy. The mechanical core almost never fails, which is exactly why owners forgive the rest.

You do not have to trust those aging LEDs anyway. On a backlit portrait or a stage-lit scene where center-weighted averaging gets fooled, take a spot or incident reading from the Zone Light Meter app, place your shadows where you want them on the zone scale, and set the dials by hand. The body was built to be driven manually, so an external reading drops straight in.

Today the MX sits in the affordable-but-respected tier. People cross-shop it against the OM-1, the Nikon FM, and the Canon FTb, and it wins on finder size while giving up nothing on toughness. Find one with a clean meter and fresh seals and the mechanical guts will run for decades more.

How the app handles this body

  • Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
  • Flash sync: Focal-plane shutter, so flash sync tops out around 1/60. Above that the app's exposure pairs still hold for available-light work.
