Rollei Rolleiflex 2.8C
People buy the 2.8C for one thing above all else: the f/2.8 taking lens and the look it carves on a 6x6 frame. That fast Planar or Xenotar (your body came with one or the other) drops backgrounds into a soft, round blur that a TLR has no business producing, and it does it on a big square negative. This is the body that converted a lot of portrait shooters to square format, and once you see what the glass does wide open you understand why.
Using it is a ritual. You hold it at your waist, drop your eyes into the folding hood, and the world arrives on the ground glass laterally reversed, which throws everybody off for the first week and then becomes second nature. The finder is big and bright by TLR standards, and you focus with the big knob on the side, watching the image snap into bite on that matte screen. Flip up the magnifier for critical work. The two lenses are stacked, so the top one frames while the bottom one shoots, which means parallax at close range and no through-the-lens metering of any kind. Loading is the classic Rollei feeler-roller system: you thread the leader past the sensing roller and wind to the start mark, and the auto-stop keeps your frame spacing even after that.
The shutter is a leaf unit running from a full second to about 1/500 at the top. It is quiet, no mirror to flip, so the camera barely moves when you trip it, which is half the reason these things shoot sharp handheld at speeds an SLR would smear. The build is dense brass and aluminum, cold in the hand, and with no electronics to fail these bodies routinely turn up working after decades in a closet.
That leaf shutter has a practical payoff. It syncs flash at every speed, all the way to 1/500, so you can drag a strobe into bright daylight and still kill the ambient sun behind your subject. Meter the scene for daylight fill with the Zone Light Meter app, set the aperture, and the body's sync flexibility does the rest. No focal-plane camera at this price gives you that.
The honest weakness is the meter, because there isn't one. The 2.8C has no built-in meter at all, so you are reading light by hand on every frame. An incident or spot reading from the app is how you place exposure here; it is the meter the body never had. Light seals can crumble and the ground glass on early bodies is dimmer than the later Maxwell-screen upgrades people bolt in. A proper CLA from a TLR specialist is not cheap.
Today the 2.8C sits below the later 2.8F in price and reputation, mostly because the F is more common and meter-equipped, but the C gives you the same fast glass and the same square negative for less money. Wedding and portrait shooters who want the Rollei look without paying F money cross-shop it against the 3.5F and the Mamiya C-series. The lens is the reason to own one, and the near-silent shutter is the reason you keep reaching for it.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
