Rollei Rolleiflex 3.5E
Put a Rolleiflex 3.5E next to the Hasselblad people usually cross-shop it against and the difference is honest before you even shoot. The Hasselblad gives you interchangeable backs and lenses and a mirror that whacks. The Rollei gives you one fixed taking lens, a leaf shutter so quiet you can work a room without anyone flinching, and a body that does not change its weight the whole job. For a lot of portrait shooters that trade was never close.
You shoot it at your waist, looking down into a ground glass that throws a big bright square back at you. The image is reversed left to right, which annoys everyone for about a week and then becomes second nature. Focus runs on the knob beside the body, and the 3.5E adds a built-in meter, a selenium cell tucked under the nameplate. It is an uncoupled readout: the cell gives you a number and you transfer it to the dials yourself, no auto-indexing. When it works it gets you in the right neighborhood. Seventy years on, most of those cells are tired or dead, and that is the body's real weakness. Selenium does not come back. You buy a 3.5E for the optics and the mechanics, not for a meter you can still trust.
The shutter is the reason studio and wedding shooters held onto these. It is a leaf design running from a full second up to about 1/500 at the top, and because the blades sit in the lens it flash-syncs at every speed. You can drop in fill flash at 1/500 in bright sun and balance an ambient sky no focal-plane camera will let you touch. A daylight-fill incident reading from the Zone Light Meter app pairs straight into that sync flexibility, since you are free to pick any speed and just set the aperture from there.
Build is the old Franke and Heidecke standard, which is to say dense and overbuilt and cold in your hands in winter. Film loading takes a minute to learn. You thread the 120 backing paper under a feed roller that senses the thickness of paper and film together to set frame one, so you load it, wind, and the counter does the bookkeeping. Twelve frames of 6 by 6. No cropping decisions in the field, just the box and what you put in it.
Today the 3.5E sits in an odd spot. It is cheaper than the f/2.8 Rolleiflexes that collectors chase, so it is the value entry into a real Rollei, and the 75mm taking lens is plenty sharp for portraiture and street. People avoid it when they want autoexposure or a working meter out of the box, and they buy it when they want the quietest, simplest medium-format camera that still holds focus and tension like the day it left Braunschweig. Send the dead meter out for nothing, carry a handheld reading, and shoot the rest of it for the next forty years.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
