Voigtlander Avus
You set the Avus down on a fence rail, pull the dark cloth over your head, and the world arrives upside down on the ground glass, dim and reversed. Open the lens wide to focus, rack the bellows until the grass edge snaps sharp, stop down, close the shutter, slide the plate holder in, pull the dark slide. Nobody who shoots this body is in a hurry, because the camera will not let you be.
Voigtlander built the Avus from 1913 into the mid 1930s, a folding plate and sheet camera from the era when large format was just what a serious camera was. The one here is the 4x5 inch version. It opens on a hinged bed, the lens standard pulls out on rails, and the bellows stretch between them like an accordion. Build quality is leather over lacquered wood with brass fittings, heavier than you expect, the kind of thing that survives a century in an attic and still racks smoothly once you free the seized struts.
The shutter is a leaf unit built into the lens, running from a full second down to about 1/250 at the top. Because the blades sit between the elements, flash fires in sync at every speed, which mattered more in the studio days than it does on a hillside now. It cocks and trips with a soft mechanical sigh, not a slap. There is no mirror to bang, no battery to die, no electronics to corrode. Everything that moves, you move.
What it does not have is a meter, and it never did. You read the light yourself, and on a ground glass that goes dark the moment you stop down, you commit to an exposure you cannot preview. This is where the Zone Light Meter app earns its keep: it computes the bellows-extension factor when you rack the standard out for a close subject, and an incident reading sets your base exposure before you ever load a holder. The Avus shipped without a meter, so this is the one you bring.
Who buys one now? Collectors, mostly, plus a stubborn fringe of large-format shooters who want a field camera that predates the Great Depression and cost them less than a modern lens. It is not a precision view camera. Movements are modest and they vary across the long production run, so do not cross-shop it against a proper monorail view camera if you need real swings and tilts. What you get instead is a portable wooden box that puts a 4x5 negative behind a sharp old uncoated lens, with the soft, low-contrast look those early glass formulas tend to give.
Find one with intact bellows, because pinholes in century-old leather are the deal-breaker, and budget for a shutter cleaning if the slow speeds hang. Do that, feed it sheet film in a modern holder, and the Avus does the job it was always good at. It pins you in place, under the cloth, until you have actually looked at the picture.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. Daylight fill stays open at any aperture, and the app's shutter ladder covers the leaf range.
- Bellows extension: Rack the standards out for close focus and you lose light. Enter the bellows draw and the app folds the extension factor into the metered exposure.
