Fujifilm · ISO 800 Color negative
Fujifilm Pro 800Z
Pro 800Z was Fujifilm's fast pro color negative at ISO 800, positioned for the event and wedding photographers who needed to work in poor light without flash. At 800 it was grainier than anything else in the Fujifilm professional lineup, but for the available-light receptions, evening ceremonies, and unlit reception halls that defined the work it was designed for, grain was an acceptable trade.
Japanese wedding photographers through the mid-2000s used it in situations where they could not or would not use flash: candlelit dinner scenes, reception speeches in dark ballrooms, outdoor work after sunset. The color balance was considered reliable even under mixed lighting conditions that would push consumer films toward problematic color casts. This was the technical quality that kept it in professional bags alongside faster and slower options.
The grain structure was coarser than Pro 400H pushed one stop, which was the comparison photographers made. Some preferred the pushed Pro 400H for its finer grain at equivalent speed; others used Pro 800Z for its slightly different color rendering and the fact that native speed often produces better shadow detail than a pushed lower-speed stock. The argument was genuine and both approaches had defenders.
Compared to Kodak's 800-speed options from the same era, Pro 800Z had a distinctly Fujifilm green-to-yellow bias in artificial light. Whether that was an advantage depended on the scene and the printer's preferences.
Fujifilm discontinued Pro 800Z in 2010 alongside several other professional stocks. The reciprocity exponent is 1.10. Zone Light Meter applies this correction past one second: a two-second reading becomes roughly 2.2 seconds, a five-second reading extends to about 5.7 seconds. At ISO 800, long-exposure situations were rare, but the correction fires whenever metered exposures extend past a second.
How the app handles this stock
- Box speed: ISO 800. Picker exposes pull/push chips so you can shoot it at any speed you want and the meter follows.
- Reciprocity: Above one second the app raises metered time to the power of 1.10.
- Expired film: if you load an old roll, set the expiry year and storage in the app and the ISO scales for you. Color negative decay rates are baked in.
