Eight frames per roll of 120, and every one of them a 6x9 negative big enough to contact-print. That is the deal the Fuji GW690 II makes you, and the 90mm f/3.5 Fujinon bolted to its front is the only lens you get. No swapping, no mount to fuss with. People call the body the "Texas Leica" because it handles like an oversized rangefinder and shoots a sheet of film with every press. On that camera the 90mm reads as the normal field of view, roughly what a 40mm gives you on small frame, so the world it draws sits the way your eye sees it.

What it renders is why the GW690 still trades used at serious prices. Wide open at f/3.5 it is already crisp across most of the frame, and by f/8 to f/11 it is clinical, edge to edge, with enough microcontrast to make a textured surface jump off the print. EBC is Fuji's Electron Beam Coating, a multi-layer electron-beam treatment, and it does its job. Point this lens at a low sun and the blacks stay clean where lesser glass would fog into a milky mess. Rendering runs neutral and a touch cool, which is part of why landscape shooters reached for it on Velvia and Provia.

It is not a bokeh lens and was never meant to be. At f/3.5 on a normal focal length you get gentle subject separation, not the melted backgrounds of a fast portrait prime. The out-of-focus rendering is calm and a little plain. Nobody buys this rig to chase swirl. They buy it for resolution and for that enormous frame.

The honest limitation is the f/3.5 maximum aperture married to a lens you cannot remove. This is a daylight and tripod tool. In a dim church you are shooting wide open with nothing faster to reach for, no way to go wider or longer than 90mm, and no built-in meter to lean on. You are metering by hand or by feel.

The Fujinon sits in a No. 0 leaf-in-lens shutter that flash-syncs at every speed up to 1/500, which is the kind of thing a focal-plane camera cannot touch. Balance fill flash against a bright sky, set your sync, and let the leaf do the rest. Zone Light Meter handles the ambient half: meter the scene, lock your sync speed, and the 67mm filter thread takes a polarizer or a graduated ND with no vignetting on the big frame.

Today it lives in the bags of landscape and documentary shooters who want medium format without dragging a view camera. People cross-shop it against the Mamiya 7 and the Plaubel Makina, both of which offer interchangeable or folding bodies for more money. The Fuji loses on flexibility and wins on resolution at the price. For a static subject in good light, very little in its class out-resolves it.

How the app handles this lens

  • Metering: Max aperture f/3.5. Meter wide open in dim light, then the app holds the reading while you stop down to your taking aperture.
  • Leaf shutter: The shutter sits in the lens, so it syncs flash at every speed instead of topping out at a body X-sync. The app's shutter ladder covers the full leaf range.
  • Filters: Takes 67mm filters. Dial an ND or polariser factor into the app and the metered exposure shifts to match.
