Hold this lens to your eye on a Mamiya 7 and the first thing you notice is what is missing: no mirror to slap, no curtain to fire, just a quiet leaf shutter in the barrel. That lack of vibration lets you hand-hold at slower speeds than any SLR of this format would allow. The 43mm covers roughly the same angle as a 21mm on 35mm full frame, and it resolves across the whole 6x7 frame in a way few retrofocus SLR wides of the era can match. It is one of the sharpest wide-angle lenses available for medium format. Corners stay tight wide open, and stopped to f/8 the negative tightens up further across the field.

A lot of that comes from the rangefinder design. With no mirror box to clear, the rear element sits close to the film plane, so the optics behave like a true symmetric wide rather than a forced retrofocus block. The trade is the usual rangefinder catch: this lens needs the external optical finder that shipped with it, because the camera's own finder does not frame 43mm. The Mamiya 7 has been the working travel kit for that crowd since the late nineties, and the 43mm is the lens they reach for when the 50mm or 65mm is not wide enough. It does not flatter faces. At 43mm on this format, edge subjects stretch, and the f/4.5 maximum aperture with deep depth of field gives you no real subject isolation. You shoot it stopped down with everything in focus, so what the out-of-focus areas look like barely comes up.

Light falloff is the thing to watch. Of the Mamiya 7 lenses this is the one that shows any corner falloff at all, light and most visible wide open on an even sky. Stop to f/8 or f/11 and it cleans up, but at f/4.5 you can still catch it on a clear blue. Flare control is good for the era thanks to the simple barrel and deep hood, though shooting straight into a low sun still drops contrast.

Like every Mamiya 7 lens it carries that leaf shutter in the barrel rather than a focal-plane curtain in the body. That buys flash sync at every speed and near-silent releases, which is half the reason the system hand-holds so well. Metering is straightforward too: set your aperture for the depth of field you want, meter the scene, dial the speed. When you put a graduated ND on the 67mm thread to hold a bright sky, log the filter factor in Zone Light Meter so the corrected exposure already accounts for the stops you are pulling off the highlights.

It sits in the premium used tier and holds value because there is no modern replacement. People cross-shop it against the 65mm and against hauling a 4x5 field kit, and the 43mm wins on weight and speed of work every time. For one wide medium-format lens that will hold detail past what most scanners can pull off film, this is the one to find.
