Leica III
Drop one in your coat pocket, walk a city for a day, and you understand what this body owns. It is small in a way no SLR ever managed, silent, and so unobtrusive that people forget you are holding a camera at all. An SLR clacks its mirror and announces itself. A medium-format body wants a tripod and a slower day. The Leica III just sits in your hand and does its job, and the cloth focal-plane shutter, running from a full second up to about 1/500, makes a soft snick that nobody across a quiet room ever hears.
The build is the other half of the story. Brass and steel, machined close, with real density for the size. These were made between 1933 and 1939, and a frightening number of them still run today without ever having been touched by a technician, which is more than you can say for any battery-dependent body from the 1980s. There is no meter. There never was one. You set shutter speed and aperture by reading the light yourself, and that is simply the deal you make with a Barnack Leica.
Using it is a deliberate, two-window ritual that splits modern shooters down the middle. The rangefinder patch and the viewfinder are separate eyepieces, the first squinty and tinted for focus, the second for framing. You focus in one, recompose in the other. Film loading is the famous pain: you trim a long leader and feed it up through the bottom, a step that has eaten more first rolls than anyone admits. None of this is fast. All of it teaches you to slow down and think before the frame.
The honest weakness is exactly that workflow. The dual-window finder is small and dim compared to the combined finder Leica introduced on the M3 in 1954, the slow speeds get sticky if the camera has sat for decades, and the bottom-load drill is genuinely annoying when you are reloading on a cold street corner. If you want quick, you bought the wrong era. People cross-shop these against the later M3 and its single bright finder, and the M almost always wins on pure usability. What keeps the III alive is size, price, and that close-machined feel for a fraction of M money.
Since there is no built-in meter and never will be, an incident or spot reading from the Zone Light Meter app is how you place exposure on a III. It is the meter the body was born without, which suits a camera that already asks you to do everything else by hand.
The people who still run film through these tend to want the lightest serious 35mm they can carry, total discretion on the street, or both at once, plus the collectors who actually shoot instead of shelving. The M39 screw mount opens the door to a deep field of small Elmar and Summar lenses, plus decades of affordable third-party glass. Buy one with clean curtains and serviced slow speeds, learn the leader trim, and you have a body that will keep working long after newer cameras have died of dead electronics.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Flash sync: Focal-plane shutter, so flash sync tops out around the body X-sync speed. Above that the app's exposure pairs still hold for available-light work.
