The shutter releases with a soft, deliberate stroke, more like a latch closing than a snap, and that quiet is the whole reason people still carry one. A Barnack Leica disappears in the hand. You wind, you focus, you press, and the only loud thing in the room is whatever you were photographing. The IIIa was the body that finally added the top speed photographers had been asking for, pushing the dial up to around 1/1000, which on a 1935 camera meant you could finally shoot fast film wide open in daylight.

Living with it is an exercise in patience. There are two eyepieces, not one. You squint through the small magnified rangefinder window to focus, then shift your eye to the wider viewfinder window to compose, and the first week you will mix them up constantly. The rangefinder patch is tiny but contrasty, and once your muscle memory sorts the two-window dance it gets quick. Film loading is the famous trial: bottom plate off, and you have to trim a long leader on the film before threading it, or you jam the works. People keep little scissors in the case for exactly this.

The build is the payoff. Chrome and brass, no electronics, nothing to rot except the slow-speed train if it has sat unused for decades. These cameras are ninety years old and a clean one still runs. There is no meter, none, never was. That is not a defect to fix; it is the design. An incident or spot reading from the Zone Light Meter app is the meter this body never had, and once you internalize sunny-sixteen for the easy days you barely think about it.

The M39 screw mount is the era context here. Every collapsible Elmar, every Soviet Industar and Jupiter copy, the whole pre-bayonet Leica ecosystem threads onto this body. It anchored the thread-mount world that the M3 bayonet replaced in 1954, and that lineage is exactly why glass for it stays cheap and plentiful. You can build a working kit around a IIIa for less than a single modern lens.

Who shoots one today: travelers and street photographers who want something small, silent, and unbreakable, plus collectors who like that it works. The honest weakness, beyond the two-window finder and the leader trim, is parallax and slow handling. This is not a camera for fast-moving action or for anyone who needs to grab a frame in two seconds. It rewards the photographer who slows down. Cross-shopped against a later M2 or a Canon P, the IIIa loses on convenience and wins on size, charm, and price. People do not buy it to be efficient. They buy it because it is a beautifully made machine that asks something of them, and it is still, after all these decades, ready to go to work.

How the app handles this body

  • Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
  • Flash sync: Focal-plane shutter, so flash sync tops out around the body X-sync speed. Above that the app's exposure pairs still hold for available-light work.
