Pentax *ist
Picture a college kid in 2004 walking into a darkroom critique with a body that weighs less than the lens hanging off it. That was the pitch of the Pentax *ist: a 35mm autofocus SLR small enough to forget you were carrying it, K-mount on the front so every Pentax lens since the 1970s screwed right on. It landed at the moment digital was eating the consumer market, and Pentax shipped it knowing the writing was on the wall. Production ran a short window, roughly 2003 to 2006, which is part of why people overlook it now.
Pick it up and the first thing you notice is how little there is to hold. The polycarbonate shell strips out the brass and zinc of the older Pentaxes, and an LX feels like an anvil by comparison. The pentamirror finder keeps the body light, and the view is bright enough to work with even if it is not huge and the frame does not pretend to be 100 percent. A multi-point autofocus array does the work, quick enough for a portrait session or a kid running across a yard, and it falls back to manual focus cleanly when you want it. Film loading is the modern drop-in-and-close kind, motorized advance and rewind, no thumb lever to crank. It runs on small lithium cells, so a dead battery means a dead camera. There is no mechanical fallback shutter speed. Carry spares.
The shutter is a focal-plane unit running from a full 30 seconds down to about 1/4000, with flash sync at 1/120. That top sync speed is genuinely useful for daylight fill, faster than the 1/60 or 1/90 most older bodies gave you. The exposure system covers the usual four modes, program, shutter-priority, aperture-priority, and full manual, all driven by a segmented meter that handles ordinary light without complaint.
Where it stumbles is the same place every averaging meter does. Backlight, a bright window behind a face, snow, a stage lit from one side. The body wants to protect the highlights and buries your shadows. For those scenes, take an incident or spot reading off the Zone Light Meter app, decide which zone the shadows belong on, and dial that into manual or nudge the exposure compensation. Then the meter is working for the picture you actually want, not the one it assumed.
Who shoots one today? People who already own Pentax glass and want a cheap, light, dead-simple way to put it on film. It is not a collector's trophy and it never will be, which keeps prices low. The honest weakness, beyond total battery dependence, is that it feels disposable next to a Pentax LX or even an MZ-S, and those plastic bodies and aging electronics are not built for a twenty-year second life. When a *ist dies, it usually dies for good, and nobody is paying for a CLA on one. But if you want autofocus, a good fast sync speed, and access to the whole K-mount catalog in a body you can drop in a jacket pocket, it does the job and asks almost nothing of you.
How the app handles this body
- Metering: Take an incident or spot reading in the app and place your shadows on a chosen zone, then dial that exposure in. On a body with no meter, or one whose cell has drifted with age, the app is the meter you trust.
- Flash sync: Focal-plane shutter, so flash sync tops out around 1/120. Above that the app's exposure pairs still hold for available-light work.
